GA4 Is Fundamentally Different from Universal Analytics. Learn It or Be Blind to Your Data.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) replaced Universal Analytics in July 2024, marking the biggest change in web analytics in a decade. Unlike Universal Analytics pageview-centric model, GA4 uses an event-based data model that tracks every interaction as an event. According to Google, businesses using GA4 advanced features like predictive audiences see 20% better campaign performance. Understanding GA4 is essential for data-driven marketing.
At x13apps, we configure and interpret GA4 for our clients. Here is the guide.
GA4 Fundamentals and Key Differences
GA4 events replace UA categories, actions, and labels. Everything is an event with parameters. Automatic events tracked without configuration: page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, and file downloads. Enhanced measurement eliminates the manual event tracking setup required in UA. Custom events track business-specific actions: form submissions, button clicks, purchases, signups.
GA4 reporting structure: Reports (pre-built reports organized by topic), Explore (custom analysis with free-form exploration, funnel analysis, path analysis, cohort analysis), and Advertising (attribution and conversion paths). The real-time report shows activity in the last 30 minutes. GA4 homepage provides an AI-generated snapshot of key metrics and trends. According to Google, the Explore section is where the most valuable insights are found — pre-built reports are surface level.
Setting Up GA4 Correctly
Data streams: create separate streams for web, iOS, and Android to unify data in one property. Cross-domain tracking: configure for multiple domains/subdomains to track users across sites accurately (essential for e-commerce with separate checkout domains). Internal traffic filtering: filter out office IP addresses and developer traffic. Referral exclusions: exclude payment gateways and other third-party domains that are not true referrals.
Key events (conversions): mark key events as conversions in GA4 for tracking business-critical actions. GA4 allows up to 30 conversion events. Set up e-commerce tracking properly with view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, and purchase events for complete funnel visibility. Link GA4 to Google Ads for audience sharing and conversion import. Link to Search Console for query data integration.
Using GA4 for Business Decisions
Traffic acquisition report: understand which channels drive users (organic, paid, social, referral, direct) and their behavior quality (engagement rate, conversion rate, average engagement time). User acquisition report: which channels first brought users to your site — important for understanding where to invest in new user acquisition. Landing page report: which pages receive the most traffic and how they convert.
Explorations: free-form exploration creates custom tables and visualizations. Funnel exploration visualizes user progression through defined steps. Path exploration shows the most common paths users take through your site. At x13apps, we set up GA4 to provide actionable business intelligence. For more, read our SEO metrics tracking guide.
