Mobile App Monetization Models: Choosing the Right Revenue Strategy

Mobile App Monetization Models: Choosing the Right Revenue Strategy

Building a Great App Is One Thing. Making It Profitable Is Another.

Choosing the right monetization model is as critical as choosing the right technology stack. According to Sensor Tower 2025, mobile app revenue reached $189 billion globally, with in-app purchases accounting for 53%, advertising 31%, and paid downloads 16%. The monetization model affects user acquisition, retention, and lifetime value — choosing wrong can doom an otherwise excellent app to financial failure.

At x13apps, we help clients design monetization strategies that align with user value. Here are the models.

Freemium and In-App Purchases

Freemium offers the core app for free with paid upgrades for premium features, content, or virtual goods. According to Swrve, only 2.2% of freemium app users ever make a purchase, but those who do spend an average of $65-90 annually. Mobile gaming dominates this model — Candy Crush generates over $1 billion annually from in-app purchases. Offer enough value in the free tier to demonstrate the app worth while making premium features genuinely compelling.

In-app purchases fall into three categories: consumable (virtual currency, boosts — purchased repeatedly), non-consumable (permanent features, ad removal — purchased once), and subscription (recurring access). Subscription pricing should be 20-30% below the standalone purchase equivalent to incentivize the recurring model. Offer annual subscriptions at a 30-50% discount versus monthly to improve retention and predictable revenue.

Advertising and Hybrid Models

In-app advertising monetizes free users who will never pay. Ad formats in order of revenue: rewarded video (users watch ads voluntarily for in-app rewards — highest eCPM and best user experience), interstitial (full-screen ads between natural breaks), native ads (blend with app content), and banners (lowest eCPM). According to eMarketer, rewarded video ads generate 4-5x the eCPM of banner ads while maintaining user satisfaction because they are opt-in.

Hybrid models combine multiple revenue streams: free tier with ads, premium tier with no ads and extra features, plus optional in-app purchases. This maximizes total revenue by monetizing users at every willingness-to-pay level. Ad mediation platforms (AdMob, ironSource, AppLovin) optimize ad revenue by auctioning impressions across multiple ad networks. At x13apps, we design monetization that enhances rather than degrades user experience. For more on app strategy, read our mobile app development process guide.
