How to Perform a Comprehensive SEO Audit: Step-by-Step Guide

An SEO Audit Reveals What Is Working, What Is Broken, and What Is Missing.

A comprehensive SEO audit evaluates every factor that affects your search engine rankings — technical, content, on-page, off-page, and user experience. According to a 2025 study by Ahrefs, 90.6% of web pages get zero organic traffic from Google, largely due to undiagnosed SEO issues. Regular audits identify problems before they cost you rankings and traffic.

At x13apps, we conduct SEO audits as the first step in every client engagement. Here is our audit framework.

Technical SEO Audit

Start with crawlability. Check robots.txt for accidental blocking of important pages. Review your XML sitemap — is it submitted to Google Search Console? Identify crawl errors. Check for broken links (404 pages) that waste crawl budget. Ensure canonical tags are correctly implemented to prevent duplicate content issues.

Check indexation — how many of your pages are actually in Google index? Use site:yourdomain.com to verify. Review page speed using Google PageSpeed Insights and Core Web Vitals data. A technical audit should be the first priority because content improvements do not matter if search engines cannot access your pages.

On-Page SEO Audit

Review title tags and meta descriptions. Check heading structure — each page should have one H1 and clear H2/H3 hierarchy. Evaluate content quality and relevance. Does it match search intent? Check for keyword cannibalization — multiple pages targeting the same keyword. Review internal linking — are your important pages getting enough internal link authority?

Check image optimization: descriptive file names, alt text, and compressed file sizes. Review URL structure. Check for schema markup — implementing the right schema types can improve click-through rates.

Off-Page SEO Audit

Analyze your backlink profile using Ahrefs or Semrush. Identify toxic or spammy backlinks that could trigger Google penalties — disavow them if necessary. Compare your backlink profile to top competitors. Identify link-building opportunities. Track brand mentions that are not linked — these are easy link-building wins.

Competitor and Content Gap Analysis

Identify your top 5 competitors in search results. Compare their content scope against yours. Find keywords they rank for that you do not. Create a prioritized list of content opportunities. At x13apps, we conduct thorough SEO audits that produce actionable improvement plans. For more, read our technical SEO checklist.
