Google Analytics 4 (GA4) replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023, but many organizations still struggle with migration. Key Differences Between UA and GA4

Data model: UA uses sessions and pageviews. GA4 uses events and parameters. Every interaction is an event. Metrics: GA4 uses engaged sessions instead of bounce rate, and engaged sessions per user instead of pages per session. Reporting: UA has predefined reports. GA4 uses exploratory reports with drag-and-drop customization. Views: UA has views for data filtering. GA4 uses data streams and filters property-level data. Sampling: GA4 has different sampling thresholds. Event parameters provide richer data than UA custom dimensions.

GA4 Migration Steps

Step 1: Create a GA4 property alongside your existing UA property. Run both in parallel for historical data comparison. Step 2: Implement GA4 tracking via Google Tag Manager or gtag.js. Map UA events to GA4 event parameters. Step 3: Set up conversions (GA4 equivalent of goals). Define key events and mark them as conversions. Step 4: Configure audiences, custom definitions, and integrations (Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery). Step 5: Export historical UA data before it is deleted (GA4 does not import UA historical data).
