Schema Markup and Structured Data: Help Google Understand Your Content

Structured Data Is How You Communicate Directly with Search Engines.

Schema markup is code added to your website that helps search engines understand your content more precisely. By defining what your content means — not just what it says — schema enables rich search results like star ratings, recipe cards, event listings, and FAQ accordions. According to a 2025 study by Search Engine Land, pages with schema markup rank an average of 4 positions higher than those without, and rich snippets can increase click-through rates by 30%.

At x13apps, we implement schema markup on every site we build. Here is what you need to know about structured data.

What Schema Markup Does

Schema markup uses a shared vocabulary to label different types of content. When you mark up a recipe page with Recipe schema, Google knows it is a recipe — it can display cooking time, ingredients, and ratings directly in search results. When you mark up a LocalBusiness schema, Google knows your business hours, location, and phone number. Schema turns ordinary search listings into rich, informative results that attract more clicks.

There are hundreds of schema types. The most useful for most businesses: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BlogPosting, FAQPage, Review, Event, Service, and BreadcrumbList. Implement the schemas most relevant to your content and business type.

JSON-LD: The Recommended Format

Google recommends JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) format. JSON-LD is a block of code placed in the head section of your page that defines all structured data for that page. Unlike microdata (which requires modifying HTML attributes), JSON-LD is separate from your content, making it easier to implement and maintain.

A typical JSON-LD block includes context, type, and properties. For a blog post: @context (schema.org), @type (BlogPosting), headline, author, datePublished, description, image, and publisher. Use Google Structured Data Markup Helper to generate JSON-LD code, or use plugins like Yoast SEO (WordPress) or built-in CMS tools.

Test Your Markup

Always test your schema markup before publishing. Use Google Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator. These tools show exactly what Google can extract from your markup and whether there are errors. Fix any warnings — they may prevent rich results from appearing. Re-test after making changes to your site.

Common Schema Types and Implementation

FAQPage schema creates accordion-style results in search. HowTo schema shows step-by-step instructions. Product schema displays price, availability, and reviews. LocalBusiness schema shows location and hours. BreadcrumbList schema enhances navigation results. At x13apps, we implement comprehensive schema markup that helps clients achieve rich search results and higher click-through rates. For more, read our technical SEO checklist.
